Our operations

We conduct our operations responsibly and with the best interest of our employees, partners and the planet in mind.

Methods to guide our work

We use established methods to understand the full extent of our carbon footprint. We calculate emissions using the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and perform Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) to understand where emissions occur during the life cycle of our clothing. The results of these calculations and assessments lay the foundation for our sustainability efforts. They help us understand what actions we should take, and how to prioritise for the best possible effect.

Green House Gas Protocol

The GHG Protocol is a widely used method for identifying emissions. Categorised into three different scopes, this allows us to measure and manage emissions from our own operations, as well as from our value chain.

  • Scope 1 covers direct emissions from sources under our control, such as company vehicles.
  • Scope 2 covers emissions produced by the energy we purchase.
  • Scope 3 covers indirect emissions released throughout our value chain that are outside of our direct control.

Life Cycle Assessments

We perform LCAs on a number of our products. The standardised method, ISO 14040/44:2006, is used to assess the environmental impact of a product or service throughout its entire life cycle, from cradle to grave. An LCA typically covers 15 integrated categories of environmental impact. Although all the parameters are important, we usually only report on the water scarcity and carbon footprint.

Reducing emissions where it makes a difference

To maintain focus on reducing our environmental impact, we have set climate targets in line with science and the Paris Agreement in all three scopes of the Green House Gas (GHG) protocol. The Paris Agreement is a UN framework aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Our GHG calculations show that 99% of our carbon footprint can be found in scope 3. This means that in order to reduce our impact and reach our goals, we need to collaborate with our suppliers. Through our Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), we have learnt the following.

  • Our largest reduction potential lies in material production.
  • Improving energy efficiency and increasing the share of renewable energy in our supply chain has a major effect on our footprint.
  • Unfortunately, changing to preferred fibres has a relatively low effect on our overall footprint. However, as it is the one decision within scope 3 that we directly control, we still plan to increase our share of preferred fibre usage.
  • Cotton cultivation and wet processing drive water scarcity.
  • 15-20% of product emissions come from user and end-of-life stages*.

*Our LCAs are based on a Swedish user scenario, meaning that these figures may vary from country to country.

Employee value proposition

Employees are our greatest asset and we do our utmost to be an attractive employer. Our highest priority is a working environment that provides our people with opportunities to grow and reasons to stay.

As a part of Hultafors Group, we strive to give all our employees a working environment that:

  • is safe, inclusive, and where we all are respected.
  • is supportive so that we all feel mentally and physically healthy.
  • encourages involvement in our business goals, creating pride as well as contributions to our growth journey.
  • offers challenges and opportunities, so we can develop our professional careers, and ourselves.
